The Benefits of Giving Back with RDO Caters Taters Sponsor, Rabobank
Did you know giving back may lower your blood pressure? Specifically, giving social support to others has been linked to lower blood pressure, according to a 2006 study published in the International Journal of Psychophysiology. It is no secret that giving support to others is what RDO Caters Taters is all about – that and enjoying a delicious potato lunch. Speaking of that lunch, potassium-rich potatoes are considered a top food for lowering blood pressure. One could say attending RDO Caters Taters is a win-win for your health! The link between giving back and food is something also exemplified in longtime RDO Caters Taters supporter, Rabobank. The Rabobank team has shown up for the Fargo-Moorhead community and RDO Caters Taters charities throughout the years. In addition to its continued support this year, the company proved how it could still show up for each other amidst COVID-19 challenges – and do a little something to get their blood pumping and healthy at the same time. Rabobank Rabobank is one of the world’s largest financial services leaders and banks, providing wholesale, rural, and retail banking, leasing, and real estate services in more than 39 countries worldwide. Underpinning the company’s global mission of Growing a Better World Together, Rabobank is committed to enabling a food-secure future for the world’s population. Through financial solutions, knowledge, and networks, the company shares a commitment with clients to ensure the long-term vibrancy of the global food system and achieve shared goals, such as improving availability and access to nutritious food and enhancing the stability of food and agriculture supply chains. Growing a Better World naturally extends to Rabobank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) work, best exemplified by one of its seven Cultural Commitments: Give and volunteer to better our communities. Rabobank has a rich history of supporting a variety of charities and empowering employees to support charitable organizations and causes they care about. There are dozens of stories that highlight this Cultural Commitment and Rabobank’s special Employee Giving Benefit, which offers two days of volunteering on company time and donation matching. As everyone knows, volunteering and group activities in general have been tougher this year and last because of COVID-19. However, one story shows how team members across the country came together for one effort, for one cause, and in support of one fellow teammate with close ties to a charity. Coming Together, Even Being Apart This summer, Rabobank employees from across the region hit the pavement across several states to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The event was driven by Ken McGrory, President of Rabo Securities USA (RSI), who experienced the disease firsthand in his family when his daughter was diagnosed at age 10. He has been an avid supporter of the foundation ever since. Now in her 30s and married, his daughter recovered, but Ken’s drive to find a cure has never wavered. Twenty-two employees riding under the name “Rabobank Team in Training” raised $45,494 total after the effort ended on July 31, including matching from Rabobank and the direct support of employees. Some rode outside in teams, others rode solo in their hometowns and some jumped on their stationary bikes at home. “For me, the greatest part of this event was to feel the camaraderie exhibited by teams across Rabobank who came together for a great cause,” Ken said. “We had daily motivational emails to support our training, tips on race preparation and some video calls to share our training stories and generate excitement for the cause. I was truly inspired by the dedication from the team!” Support Across the Miles Whether racking up the miles on their bikes or giving back in other ways, Rabobank team members certainly have put themselves in a position to reap the reward of lower blood pressure. As for eating potatoes on Nov. 16, they may have to find a way to enjoy the event this year. With their offices located outside of the Fargo-Moorhead area, it might be surprising to learn that Rabobank team members have attended RDO Caters Taters in person, numerous times. Each year, Rabobank always made the effort to have a handful of team members travel to Fargo to attend the event and enjoy the famous pound-tatoes in person. While COVID-19 may impact their ability to attend this year, this is one team that has proven how well they all can show up virtually for something they care about.
