Sponsor Spotlight – Valley Irrigation

20 years ago this year, RDO Caters Taters for Charity held its first event in Fargo, designed to bring together members of the community and raise money for a local charity. Today, the event has become a community staple of camaraderie, connection, and charitable giving, raising nearly $675,000 total throughout the years. But the event didn’t grow on its own. RDO Caters Taters has continued to be successful thanks to the generous companies that sponsor the event year after year. Here’s a look at one of them: Valley® Irrigation. Spotlight on Valley Irrigation A quick Google search would reveal that Valley Irrigation provides center pivot and linear irrigation solutions used on farms around the world, as well as technology solutions that help growers manage their machines. With R.D. Offutt Company’s strong roots in the farming industry, it’s easy to see the natural connection Valley Irrigation has to RDO Caters Taters. But there’s even more to it than meets the eye, as shared by Trevor Mecham, Vice President of Global Technology Strategy. 1. Manual to Digital Today, more than half of the lunches enjoyed at RDO Caters Taters are taken to-go. Thanks to the event’s online Take Out form, the process is fast and easy for all involved. But less than a decade ago, the submission and fulfillment process was done manually – much more time-consuming. Trevor reflects on the similarities to the irrigation industry, recalling the days he spent in the field doing work that’s now done via apps and technology. “Growing up, I used a moisture probe and big red book where I’d hand graph out my next week of irrigation,” he said with a laugh. “That’s just how it was done, manually. Now, growers have opportunities to manage irrigation practices much more efficiently and effectively. They can monitor and control multiple pivots from across their farm or across the world via smartphone, tablet, or PC.” 2. More Than Just More While a primary goal of RDO Caters Taters certainly is to raise a lot of money for the benefiting charity, there’s more to it than just the dollars. RDO Caters Taters aims to raise awareness of the charity and connect attendees to its mission, with the goal that the charity continues to benefit long after the final spud is served on event-day. The goal behind Valley Irrigation pivots and technology is two-fold as well – and one of those aspects isn’t what most would likely expect. “Precision irrigation isn’t just about encouraging bigger yields, growing more potatoes,” Trevor explained. “It’s about encouraging a better finished product, better-quality potatoes, and helping growers make the best decisions going forward. Our smart irrigation solutions provide real-time equipment, environmental, and agronomic data to help growers optimize efficiency.” 3. Potato Farmers It’s hard to think about R.D. Offutt Company and not recognize founder Ron Offutt’s beginnings as a potato farmer. Similarly, Trevor’s ties to potatoes trace back to his early years and a family legacy as growers. “I grew up in Idaho and am a third-generation potato farmer myself,” he says proudly. Like Ron, Trevor may have expanded his career outside of the farm. But he loves and appreciates the experience and knowledge he gained working in the fields, and still finds it to be of value every day.
